Focus on artificial intelligence and energy transition regulation at industry legal conference

23/09/2024

Artificial intelligence (AI) and the regulatory path to net zero for carbon capture and storage plus hydrogen are two of the themes at Offshore Energies UK’s (OEUK) Legal Conference, which takes place in Aberdeen at Ardoe House Hotel on September 26.

With a membership of over 400 organisations with an interest in offshore oil, gas, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and wind, OEUK will host the event with sponsorship from Clyde & Co LLP and additional support from fellow legal firm, CMS.

A host of expert industry speakers and sessions have been announced, including Enrique Cornejo, Head of Energy Policy at OEUK, who will outline the policy and regulatory landscape shaping the homegrown transition to low carbon energy. While providing an overview of the regulatory roles and responsibilities, this session also considers legal frameworks governing project development and operation alongside subsidy support mechanisms aimed at driving investment.

Generative AI, a type of artificial intelligence that broadly describes machine learning systems capable of generating text, images, code or other types of content, is rapidly gaining traction amongst businesses, professionals and consumers. With recent advances leading to generative AI going mainstream, experts will lead a session providing practical demonstrations while highlighting the key legal issues that require scrutiny when procuring and using the technology.

Mark Walsh, Partner, Clyde & Co, principal sponsor of the conference, said:

“OEUK’s annual legal conference is known across the industry as an important and impactful way to bring leaders together to discuss some of the most pressing issues and opportunities facing the sector. We’re proud to sponsor the event for another year and look forward to what will undoubtedly be a day of insightful discussions and shared learnings.”

Commenting, OEUK’s Legal Manager Tracey Keith said:

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of OEUK’s legal conference. This event is an invaluable opportunity for in-house and private practice lawyers, and specialist contractors of all levels, to network and engage in discussions with colleagues at the leading edge of the profession. It’s a great opportunity to hear about the changes taking place in our evolving offshore energy industry, topical issues and how they affect our community.”

The one-day conference will conclude with a dinner featuring entertainment from Kevin Quantum, a magician and scientist whose talents have taken him from working as an Edinburgh lab scientist to his new life as an international showman.
