Google has released several September updates for devices running on the Android operating system, with many of these enhancements powered by the Gemini artificial intelligence.
Enhanced Audio Descriptions for Images
The TalkBack screen reader, originally designed for blind or visually impaired users, has received an upgrade. With the integration of Gemini, it can now provide more accurate descriptions of images. This AI will describe what’s depicted in product photos from online stores, user galleries, and even images and videos from social media.
Music Search Without Leaving the App
The new “Circle to Search” feature enables users to identify music playing in videos without needing to open a separate app. Users can also determine which track is playing nearby. A musical note icon will appear next to the search bar; tapping it activates the search, leading to a browser page that displays the song’s title and details.
Voice Narration for Web Pages
In addition to image descriptions, Google has introduced a voice narration option for web pages on Android. While listening to news articles, blog posts, recipes, or other content, users can select their preferred narration speed, voice, and language.
Earthquake Alerts for Android
Currently available only in the United States, this update includes a new technology designed to alert users a few minutes before the first tremors of an earthquake. Google utilises data from local geological organisations to implement this feature, which relies on readings from traditional analog seismometers.
Updated Google Maps for Smartwatches
Wear OS smartwatch users can now explore new locations without needing to hold their smartphones. The updated Google Maps service for smartwatches allows users to navigate using the watch’s display. They can search for locations using voice commands and view their position directly on the watch screen.
Looking Ahead
The September updates from Google are just the beginning for this year. The company has promised further Android updates for a range of Google Pixel models and other devices by the end of the year. To make the most of the Android system’s capabilities, users can take advantage of attractive mobile plans from “unlimited,” which offer unlimited access to chosen services, allowing for optimised data usage tailored to individual needs.
