Specialist climate tech hub and investor announce expansion into Scotland

04/11/2024

Sustainable Ventures, a leading climate tech hub and investor, has announced its expansion into Scotland with a new partnership in Glasgow. The company, known for its significant impact in the climate tech sector, is joining forces with Techscaler, the Scottish Government’s national tech startup education programme, to establish a new hub in Glasgow.

This expansion marks a significant milestone for both Sustainable Ventures and Scotland’s growing climate tech ecosystem. With an impressive track record of supporting over 700 climate tech companies that have collectively raised more than £1.1 billion and created over 6,000 jobs, Sustainable Ventures brings valuable expertise and resources to the Scottish market.

The new Glasgow hub will provide local startups with access to Sustainable Ventures’ extensive programs, which have proven successful in other locations such as London, Manchester, and Cambridge. These programs include intensive 12-month support initiatives, one-on-one mentoring, and professional services aimed at accelerating growth and securing future funding rounds.

Garry Boyle, Regional Development Associate at Sustainable Ventures, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion. He commented: “We’re excited by our expansion into Scotland, and the move illustrates the importance and potential of climate tech and energy transition here.”

He emphasised that their overall plan focuses on leveraging capital from London into Scotland, alongside providing specialist support to help Scotland transition to net zero.

The partnership with Techscaler, which is run by CodeBase and already supports approximately 100 climate tech companies across Scotland, is expected to create synergies that will benefit the entire ecosystem.

Yasmin Sulaiman, Senior VP of Ecosystems at CodeBase, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, noting that Sustainable Ventures’ decision to launch a hub in Scotland is “great news for our fast-growing climate tech sector and the overall push towards green transition.”.

This initiative has also received support from the Scottish Government. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes emphasised the importance of innovation in the journey to net zero and expressed confidence that this partnership will help Scotland’s newest and most exciting business ventures develop and scale technologies crucial for addressing global challenges.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said: “Unlocking the ideas and innovation that will support the journey to net zero is crucial, and Scotland is already home to a significant number of startups and businesses developing important solutions to global challenges.

“This new partnership will help out newest and most exciting business ventures to develop and scale the technologies and products that will become increasingly important in the coming years, while driving Glasgow’s economy and growing its reputation as a thriving, innovative city.”
