Heriot-Watt Online Launches MSc in Computer Science with AI
New online programme addresses global demand for AI skills and professionals.
Heriot-Watt Online has announced the launch of its new MSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence (AI), delivered in partnership with Coursera. Building on the success of the MSc Computer Science launched in 2024, the new programme introduces a dedicated specialism in Artificial Intelligence.
The launch comes as organisations across every sector are accelerating investment in artificial intelligence, which Heriot-Watt Online states is creating unprecedented demand for professionals with the skills to design, build, and lead AI-powered innovation. According to labour market intelligence from Lightcast, global demand for AI skills has increased by 124% year-on-year. Professionals with AI capabilities earn a median global salary of £103,186.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies advances in artificial intelligence and information processing as a transformative force reshaping the global economy. The report finds that 86% of employers expect AI and information-processing technologies to transform their businesses by 2030, while AI and big data rank among the fastest-growing skills required in the global workforce.
Dr Abrar Ullah, Associate Professor, School of Mathematical and Computer Science at Heriot-Watt University, said: “While AI tools are becoming increasingly accessible, organisations need professionals with the expertise to understand how these technologies work, where they create value and how they can be deployed responsibly. A master’s degree provides learners with that deeper level of understanding. This programme combines strong computer science foundations with specialist AI expertise, preparing graduates not only for technical roles, but also for leadership positions shaping how AI is adopted across organisations and industries.”
Developed in partnership with Coursera, the programme offers flexible online delivery, enabling learners globally to study alongside work and other commitments. To broaden access to postgraduate study, the programme also offers a performance-based admissions pathway.
Russell Brooks, Chief Executive Officer of Heriot-Watt Online, said: “Widening access to education is a core part of Heriot-Watt University’s mission, alongside teaching students the skills they need to go out and make a real difference in the world. This course is that philosophy in action. There is huge demand for these skills globally, and we have the academic expertise and experience in online learning to properly equip our students. Working with Coursera, and opening a broader route into higher education, means learners anywhere in the world can build these skills around their work and their lives.”
Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer at Coursera, added: “We’re proud to expand our partnership with Heriot-Watt University to make advanced AI education more accessible to learners around the world. As AI reshapes every industry, this program gives professionals a flexible, accessible pathway to build deep AI expertise, advance their careers, and help shape how this transformative technology is applied in the world.”
Applications to the course can now be made online.
