Aberdeen is channelling the same innovative spirit that produced Nobel Prize-winning MRI scanners and conquered the North Sea’s hostile environment to lead a digital revolution that is transforming Scotland’s economy. Opportunity North East (ONE) is at the heart of this transformation, providing the platform and investment needed for “ambitious founders to raise and share their ambitions, translating knowledge into action and accelerating impact” through collaborative spaces like ONE Tech Hub.
As part of this drive, Aberdeen will host the Future of Digital Tech Summit in November, a landmark event that brings together leading innovators. Set for November 7 at the Sandman Signature Hotel, this event will showcase Aberdeen’s rapidly diversifying digital sector, with key sessions devoted to AI-powered innovation and digital transformation.
Aberdeen’s Legacy of Innovation
“Aberdeen University researchers were at the forefront of developing ground-breaking Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology that would go on to save lives across the world,” said Professor Alison Murray, radiology at the University of Aberdeen, adding, “the significance of the development could not be underestimated”. This pioneering breakthrough forms part of a tradition, with the city responsible for the invention of partition chromatography, first color photograph, and the discovery of insulin.
A New Era for Scotland’s Economy
ONE’s mission is “to catalyse and grow a vibrant digital tech ecosystem and turn the region into a global hub for the industrial digital economy”. Over the past four years, the north east’s digital economy has expanded from 7% to over 11% of Scotland’s total, adding 100 new businesses to its thriving cluster of over 300 tech companies.
“North east Scotland is home to one of UK’s fastest-growing tech clusters,” ONE highlights, with the ambition to scale 10–20 businesses to international turnover exceeding £20 million per annum.
The ONE Tech Hub supports businesses to accelerate growth through mentorship, entrepreneurial education, and networking, creating new high-value jobs and driving regional expansion into sectors from EnergyTech to health tech.
Transforming Scotland’s Digital Landscape
ONE works in partnership with government and industry to expand “superfast broadband, close the digital divide, and accelerate tech-led recovery,” with strategic investments enhancing digital connectivity and economic resilience. Local authorities cite Aberdeen as receiving dedicated Gigabit broadband and additional investment in faster public-sector connectivity as part of Scotland’s wider ambition to achieve 100% digital coverage.
Future Impact?
ONE’s impact on high-growth businesses is tangible, with founders speaking openly about the support transforming their trajectory.
Ben Stuart and Ben Bamford of Leap AI credited the “North East Venture Mentoring Pilot, led by ONE with partners Energy Transition Zone, Net Zero Technology Centre, University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University and Scottish Enterprise” for helping them scale successfully. As they explained: “Our mentors – Deirdre Michie, Mike Fleming and Rob Burnett – have guided our journey in Aberdeen’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, giving us access to sector expertise and networks we wouldn’t have found anywhere else”.
Innes Grant, COO of Rahd.AI, describes a similar benefit: “There is a global race for jobs of tomorrow and we can anchor many of these jobs in Aberdeen as we scale up this game-changing technology … Our platform not only aligns with the UK Government’s AI ambition, it also helps tackle one of its most expensive industrial problems—reducing the cost of oil and gas decommissioning”. Grant emphasised ONE’s role in “creating the conditions for game-changing technology to flourish and deliver real economic value”.
For Fennex, ONE’s collaborative facilities and business growth programmes have created “an unprecedented range of specialist facilities and entrepreneurial support. That is a real vote of confidence by ONE and all the partners in their potential, our economy and our future,” as stated by Jennifer Craw, CEO of ONE.
The forthcoming Future of Digital Tech Summit serves as both a celebration and a driving force, which organisers hope will highlight Aberdeen’s impressive transformation from an energy capital to a burgeoning tech centre, while fostering new relationships among founders, scale-up leaders, and investors.
“We want to be right in the middle of that conversation and leading that conversation at Scottish level,” declares Craw.
With a digital sector expanding more rapidly than any other segment of the regional economy, and AI-driven businesses paving the way for the future, Aberdeen is excellently positioned to fulfill that goal.
For entrepreneurs and investors seeking opportunities outside conventional tech hubs, Aberdeen presents something distinctive: a city that merges extensive industrial knowledge with entrepreneurial vigour, top-tier engineering talent with affordable expenses, and crucially, a history of addressing some of humanity’s most challenging technological issues. The North East’s legacy of Nobel Prizes persists – but now it’s unfolding in code.
