As the Tech Nation Report celebrates its 10th year, it illustrates a UK technology landscape that has swiftly reached a valuation of $1.2 trillion. In this milestone edition, The Tech Nation Report chronicles ten years of extraordinary growth – while highlighting the pressing challenges that await.

Centred on the industry’s greatest obstacle – growth – the report depicts a developing yet inconsistent ecosystem that now requires daring initiatives to maintain its competitive edge.

Based on insights from over 1,000+ UK tech leaders, the report reveals:

  • 163 unicorns – and 90% are staying and scaling in the UK
  • Fintech and SaaS still dominate, but deep tech and AI are gaining ground
  • The sector is growing at 12.5% CAGR, outpacing the rest of Europe

Yet founders are calling for urgent action:

  • 50% want new government-backed funds to unlock capital
  • 1 in 3 growth-stage founders say pension fund reform is critical
  • Half of UK investors want stronger tax incentives to increase activity

The UK hosts 23% of Europe’s technology firms that generate over $500 million in revenue, along with 38% of its growth-stage companies within the $25–100 million bracket. However, numerous UK businesses find it challenging to surpass the $100 million revenue threshold, indicating that the journey to achieving global scale is still a significant hurdle.

While having 17,000 venture capital-backed startups is impressive, it is evident that industry leaders believe the ecosystem must advance to sustain its progress and elevate aspirations to compete on a more global stage.

Scotland’s Quiet Ascent

Although London is the largest player in terms of size, Scotland is rising as a notable high-growth success within the UK’s technology sector.

From 2020 to 2025, Scotland’s tech industry has expanded at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19%, achieving a total valuation of £26.6 billion. Venture capital investment in Scotland reached $660 million in 2024, reflecting a remarkable 120.3% increase since 2020.

Scotland boasts three unicorns, which accounts for a 2.2% share of the national market.

This growth indicates a rising confidence among investors in the area, and with ongoing momentum, Scotland could establish itself as one of the most vibrant tech hubs in the UK.

Speaking in its foreword, Peter Kyle, secretary of state for science,
innovation and technology, said: “At every stage, UK startups are raising bigger rounds than they were last year, with deep tech and AI firms leading the way.”

“We have sent a powerful statement of intent: we will not hold back in our pursuit of change. Now, it’s time to double down. We know that the success of our startups and scale-ups will define our country’s path to prosperity in the decade to come.”

“Together, we will make Britain a country that encourages innovation and rewards ambition – a country that every part of our tech sector is proud to call home.”
