Fera Science’s acquisition of sustainability consultancy 3Keel points to a wider shift in how organisations—particularly across food, agriculture and life sciences—are tackling increasingly complex environmental and supply chain challenges, with clear implications for Scotland’s innovation economy.

The York-based science services firm is combining its laboratory and field expertise with 3Keel’s advisory strength to create a more integrated, end-to-end platform—something that is becoming increasingly critical as regulation tightens and climate pressures intensify.

For Scotland, the move is particularly relevant to sectors such as whisky, where producers are under growing pressure to decarbonise supply chains, improve water stewardship, and meet ambitious net zero targets while maintaining global competitiveness.

Dr Andrew Swift, Chief Executive of Fera, said: “Joining with 3Keel presents a fantastic opportunity to grow our combined capabilities in support of our markets in sustainability services and responsible environmental stewardship. Bringing together our complementary strengths creates an unrivalled and uniquely powerful platform to support our clients and partners in addressing climate risk, improving resilience and delivering long-term impact.”

3Keel, founded in 2013, has built its reputation advising on sustainable supply chains and resilient food systems—areas that closely align with Scotland’s strengths in agri-tech, land use, and environmental innovation.

Its Managing Director, Simon Miller, said: “We are delighted to join forces with Fera, where we will continue to provide our consulting services as well as now having an array of new capabilities at our fingertips. Fera is a unique organisation and it’s clear that its scientific expertise, direct links to government and proven R&D track record will hugely bolster the impact of the work that 3Keel does and will, no doubt, enable joint innovation.”

Backed by Bridgepoint and DEFRA, the combined group is positioning itself to support organisations navigating climate risk, biodiversity targets, and evolving regulatory frameworks—pressures that are equally shaping Scotland’s business and policy landscape.

While financial terms were not disclosed, the deal underlines a broader trend: the convergence of deep scientific capability with strategic advisory as businesses seek practical, measurable routes to sustainability.
