Qualcomm Technologies has announced a collaboration with Amazon covering multiple generations of customised chips for AI data centres. The agreement, announced on 8 September, focuses on AI inference and connectivity for Amazon Web Services infrastructure.

The companies will also work on optical connections designed to support the growing scale and bandwidth demands of AI systems. Qualcomm says the collaboration will draw on its chip-design, processing and networking technologies.

Cristiano Amon, president and chief executive of Qualcomm Incorporated, said in the announcement: “As AI demand accelerates, data center infrastructure will require advances in both computing and connectivity to deliver greater performance with more efficiency.”

Qualcomm also plans to expand its own use of AWS AI infrastructure, including Amazon Bedrock, for electronic design automation. The company says this work is intended to shorten chip-design cycles.

AWS vice president Prasad Kalyanaraman said in the release that the collaboration aims to deliver better-performing, more efficient and cost-effective infrastructure for customers. Those benefits remain the companies’ stated objectives rather than independently verified results.

Qualcomm’s announcement does not disclose a deal value or a timetable for deploying the customised chips.
