Scottish Biotech RoukenBio Emerges as Global Immunology Leader Following NorthEdge Investment
From Motherwell Startup to Pre-Clinical Pioneer, Driving Innovation in Biologics Discovery
RoukenBio, a Scottish contract research organisation (CRO), has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from a local startup into an award-winning global pioneer in discovery-phase immunology. The Motherwell-based firm, originally known as Antibody Analytics, rebranded in 2024, marking its growth from three employees in 2015 to a team of over 110 by November 2025, serving clients in more than 27 countries.
Founded in 2015 by CEO Andy Upsall, the company’s initial focus was on biosimilar testing and antibody characterisation. Upsall’s vision was to “build a CRO that blended scientific excellence with a collaborative culture,” moving beyond traditional testing to integrate with clients’ research by co-designing studies and troubleshooting challenges. This ambition led to a pivotal shift in 2018 towards specialised immunology services, addressing a critical need in biotherapeutics development for immune-mediated diseases, including oncology, autoimmunity, and inflammation.
The global pharmaceutical CRO market is experiencing robust growth, valued at approximately USD 44.95 billion in 2025 and projected to reach around USD 91.16 billion by 2035, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.33%. Within this expanding landscape, the immunology segment is a high-growth area, driven by the increasing complexity and cost of biologics discovery. Biologics, such as monoclonal antibodies, are larger and more complex than traditional small molecule drugs, requiring highly controlled conditions, sophisticated technology, and specialised expertise for their development.
RoukenBio’s commitment to addressing these challenges is evident in its proprietary technologies. Its flagship dual-inducible cell line platform, IndEx-2, launched in 2023, enables scientists to precisely control the expression of target proteins to evaluate the safety and efficacy of targeted immunotherapies. This allows developers to understand therapeutic candidates earlier in the costly drug discovery process, potentially accelerating development timelines and improving the selection of clinical candidates. More recently, RoukenBio introduced LocIn, an advanced cell line generation platform that streamlines the creation of genetically identical isogenic cell lines. Pronounced ‘loch-in’ to reflect its Scottish heritage, this system can shorten cell line generation timelines by approximately six weeks, offering greater precision and reproducibility for early-stage discovery.
A significant milestone for RoukenBio was securing a multi-million-pound investment from private equity firm NorthEdge in 2023. NorthEdge, a Manchester-headquartered firm with a focus on healthcare, saw RoukenBio as a “catalyst for exciting growth, innovation, and global impact.” This investment has been instrumental in expanding RoukenBio’s Motherwell facilities into the Rouken Discovery Centre, increasing laboratory capacity, and acquiring state-of-the-art equipment. Plans are already in motion to double the company’s footprint, aiming for capacity to accommodate up to 250 staff, reinforcing its position as a regional powerhouse and global leader in pre-clinical immunology research.
Beyond technology and investment, RoukenBio has actively cultivated a high-performance culture, supported by strategic business development initiatives focusing on leadership development and workplace innovation. This includes implementing self-managed teams and investing in comprehensive training for its diverse team of immunologists, oncologists, and molecular biologists.
As RoukenBio continues to complete its facility expansion and pilot next-generation primary cell assays and 3D cellular models, it remains focused on its mission to be a trusted CRO for biotherapeutic developers worldwide, pushing the boundaries of immunology research.
