University of Edinburgh spin-out BIOCAPTIVA has secured £1.58 million in new funding and launched its first product in the United States, aiming to tackle one of liquid biopsy’s biggest bottlenecks: preparing blood samples for cancer research and diagnostics. The round was led by existing investor Archangels, with support from Old College Capital, BBI, Scottish Enterprise and new investor EverQuest Capital Partners.
BIOCAPTIVA’s msX platform uses patented magnetic bead technology to capture cell-free DNA directly from whole blood without the need for centrifuges or additional reagents, simplifying workflows while improving sample quality. By making it easier to obtain high‑quality cfDNA at scale, the technology is designed to support more reliable and efficient liquid biopsy testing, which is increasingly used as a less‑invasive alternative to surgical tissue biopsies in cancer research and diagnostics.
The company has launched its msX kits for research use in Boston, building a body of evidence across different applications as it targets laboratories and life sciences organisations working at the cutting edge of oncology and genetic analysis. The new investment will fund further R&D and an expanded product range, with BIOCAPTIVA positioning itself as a platform provider for next‑generation liquid biopsy and non‑invasive genetic testing.
